IECED and PTCE pioneers in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) during online endoscopy course
The innovative technology shows a promising future, both for doctors and patients, by increasing the possibility of detecting with greater precision the location of organs during an Echoendoscopy and treating the patient's ailment more easily, quickly and effectively.
During the presentation, Dr. Carlos Robles-Medranda, director of the IECED and PTCE, and Dr. Raquel Del Valle, a staff member, performed the Echoendoscopy (Endoscopic Ultrasound - EUS) in a patient with a cystic lesion in the pancreatic neck, international moderators connected from their homes, from different time zones and thousands of kilometers, watched in awe the presentation of AI technology.
“It is something extraordinary”, agreed doctors Eduardo De Moura (Brazil) and Amy Tyberg (USA), who also added that “it is very exciting… I had not even seen something like this applied to the EUS before in the US, I want to keep seeing more and more about Artificial Intelligence in our medical practice”.
But what do we know about Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the use of Echoendoscopy (EUS)? It is a prototype in its initial phase, developed by the Mediconsgroup company, which allows organs to be recognized in real time, with a diagnostic accuracy of 85% to 90%.
"It allows to recognize structures and do self-learning ... and, possibly, it will help to reduce the learning curve of Endoscopic Ultrasound training, both radially and linearly, and will be within the reach of any endoscopist, without the need to travel, even more so now in times of COVID ... What we are seeing is part of the future, already in the present, ” explained Dr. Carlos Robles-Medranda.
A milestone for Ecuador, made from the IECED endoscopy rooms, before the eyes of thousands of viewers around the world, from 40 countries of 4 continents, who observed for the first time the application of AI in Endoscopic Ultrasound.
Connected from Yemen, China, Taiwan, Russia, Egypt, India, Turkey, Korea, Nyanmar, France, Poland, Brazil, USA, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico, among others..., crossing borders and continents, this historic event in the world of digestive endoscopic medicine was broadcasted live from Ecuador, becoming an unprecedented act for 2020.
Another highlight was the presentation of Artificial Intelligence for the detection of colon polyps. It is another technology, in this case, developed by Pentax Medical, which was also released for the first time live during the medical journey. "It is the future of colonoscopy... I think this is an excellent demonstration of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help us", said Dr. Carlos Robles-Medranda, supported by Dr. Mihir Wagh, who also noted that "the AI fixes our attention on the area of the injury, and it is interesting that it even detects the polyp when it is caught in the net”.
Undoubtedly, it is positive news for the so-called pandemic year, especially for Ecuador, a pioneer in the use of this futuristic technology implemented for the first time in the world, from the endoscopy rooms of IECED and the Pentax Training Center Ecuador (PTCE).
Available in 3 languages
The diversification of the language was another factor that was present in the fourth edition of the online course event. For the first time, the dubbling narration has been expanded so that more non-Spanish-speaking Internet users, as well as non-English-speaking users, can watch and listen to the course in another language.
This is how the Portuguese is welcomed, and it becomes an official part of the medical conference, so that more specialists in gastroenterology and endoscopy from Brazil, Portugal and other regions can enjoy it through the PentaxCongress platform , both in its web version, as well as for IOS and Android, suitable for use on smart devices (phone, tablets, Ipads, etc.), for a period of 1 year.
Reason why, all those who bought their tickets or received scholarships from different organizations or companies, can rewatch the event as many times as they like and download their digital diploma (only in the web version), once they have registered in the system ( *mandatory).
The course is available for 1 year on the platform www.pentaxcongress.com in Spanish, English and Portuguese.
30 Cases in 3 simultaneous rooms
As in previous editions, the icing on the cake of the course, without question, is the live endoscopic procedures. This year, a total of 30 cases were performed, with the use of state-of-the-art technologies, such as: Confocal Endomicroscopy in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases, lithotripsy, varicose ligation, optical magnification and mucosectomy, radiofrequency in the pancreas, magnoview in the esophagus, chromoendoscopy , Spyglass, ERCP, POEM, Z-POEM and the aforementioned Artificial Intelligence (AI), among others.
All this without forgetting the stellar participation of the endoscopy expert, Dr. Marc Giovannini (France), as moderator of several live cases, who knew how to provide with excellence his point of view on the treatment and the techniques applied during the live transmissions of the procedures.
Bet on continuing education
With the support of various strategic allies, the 4th Online Live Endoscopy Online of IECED and PTCE had the endorsement of renowned international organizations such as the World Endoscopy Organization (WEO), the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and the Brazilian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SOBED), as well as the following companies, which year after year are committed to the progress and promotion of continuing medical education:
